South Africa is the largest Stone Fruit producer in Africa, but accounts for only 16% production in the Southern Hemisphere. However, South Africa has gained a reputation for exceptional quality of Stone Fruit. This is because of the high demand in especially Europe and the United Kingdom.

Stone Fruit Production

Production is primarily centered on peaches, apricots, nectarines, and plums with about 350 000 tons of these fruits produced each year. Peaches and nectarines, in particular, represent more than half of this. Small volumes of cherries are also produced with volumes of lychees increasing steadily over the past few years.

Stone Fruit Marketing

Extensive promotional activity has put South African Stone Fruit “at the front of consumer and retailer minds”. In recent months the marketing campaign of Stone Fruit highlight both the quality of the product and consistence of the supply. There is also further excitement coming down the line in terms of new product development.

Planting

How do you plant Stone Fruits? By following these steps:

Prepare Hole for planting – Dig a hole that’s twice as wide and deep as the tree’s root ball. This extra space will give the roots plenty of room to spread out and establish themselves.

Backfill & Water – Mix a good amount of organic compost with the soil that’s dug out and fill the hole. Fill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the base of the tree to remove any air pockets. Give the tree a thorough watering to help settle the soil and eliminate any remaining pockets.

Mulch for moisture retention – Spread a lyer of organic mulch, such as wood chipsor straws, around the base of the tree. Mulch helps retain soil moisture, suppressed weeds, and regulates soil temperature.

Support & Protect – Depending on the size/variety of the tree, you need to provide additional support in the form of stakes or ties to keep it upright until the roots establish themselves.

Importance of a Business Plan for Stone Fruit Farming

A written Business Plan is an important tool for business success. Think of it as a roadmap – you can travel without one, but you’re much more likely to get lost along the way. Whether starting a new farm business or managing an established operation, the answer is the same: Business Plans are a worthwhile investment.
